Windows 95 Set-up Instructions



Welcome to West Coast Online. The following instructions will take you through the simple set up for Windows95™. Please follow each step carefully. The buttons or tabs you will need to click on are highlighted.

Step 1: Verify that Dial-up Networking is Installed

Press the START button, select SETTINGS, then CONTROL PANEL. Double-click the ADD/REMOVE PROGRAMS icon. Select the WINDOWS SETUP tab, then click on the COMMUNICATIONS option and press DETAILS. Make sure that the DIAL-UP NETWORKING option is selected. If it is, go on to step 2. If it isn't, select it and click OK. Windows 95 will attempt to install the needed drivers, so make sure you've got your installation disks or CD handy! Now that Dial-up Networking is installed, you can proceed to step 2.

Step 2: Verify that the Dial-up Adapter and TCP/IP Protocol are Installed

Press the START button, select SETTINGS, then CONTROL PANEL. Double-click the NETWORK icon. Select the CONFIGURATION tab. Both DIAL-UP ADAPTER and TCP/IP should be present , If they proceed to step 3.

To add the Dial-Up Adapter, hit the ADD... button, double-click ADAPTER, then scroll down the list until you can select MICROSOFT. Choose the DIAL-UP ADAPTER and hit OK. If you need to install TCP/IP, hit the ADD button, double-click PROTOCOL, then select MICROSOFT, then TCP/IP, and hit OK.

Now your Network dialog box should contain both Dial-Up Adapter and TCP/IP. Select the DIAL-UP ADAPTER, click PROPERTIES...,Bindings, and make sure the TCP/IP box is checked. Your IP address is dynamic (it is assigned by WCO each time you log on).


Step 3: Set up the Connection Icon

Open up MY COMPUTER from the desktop and double-click the DIAL-UP NETWORKING icon. Double-click the MAKE NEW CONNECTION icon. This will walk you through the Make New Connection wizard.

The name of the computer you are dialing is WCO, (or West Coast Online). Your modem should be shown in the Select a modem: area. Press the CONFIGURE button and you'll get a dialog box.

In the General section select 57600 as your modem speed. This will allow your modem's compression to try to increase the connection speed. Do not select ONLY CONNECT AT THIS SPEED. This will let your modem adjust as the connection needs. Click on OK.

Click the NEXT > button in the Make New Connection wizard. Enter in the wco phone number that's local for you.

Step 4: Setting the Dial-Up Properties

Right click on the WCO icon and choose PROPERTIES. You will get a dialog box named WCO.

Press the SERVER TYPE button. You'll get the Server Types dialog box. In the "Type of Dial-Up Server" section, choose the PPP: server type in the list box.

In the Advanced section select ENABLE SOFTWARE COMPRESSION, and unselect the other 2 options.


In the Allowed Network Protocols select TCP/IP.

Click on the TCP/IP button This will bring up the TCP/IP Settings dialog box. Select SERVER ASSIGNED IP ADDRESS. Select SPECIFY NAME SERVER ADDRESSES and enter the following numbers;

PRIMARY DNS 199.4.94.1
SECONDARY DNS 199.4.94.10
PRIMARY WINS 0.0.0.0
SECONDARY WINS 0.0.0.0

At the bottom of the screen select both USE IP HEADER COMPRESSION and USE DEFAULT GATEWAY ON REMOTE NETWORK and click on OK.


Step 5: Dialing in and Getting Connected

Double-click the WCO icon. You'll get the Connect To dialog. Put your username and password in the appropriate text areas.

Press the CONNECT button and your modem should start dialing. When you see the connected dialog box appear with a running timer, you are connected. Start up your web browser or email software, and start surfing the net.
