Uploading Your Web Pages
Introduction
So you've been all across the Web, and now you're ready for the next step. Creating your own page. All West Coast Online accounts give you a space to publish your own web masterpiece. This tutorial is designed to guide you through the process of getting your pages from your computer to ours where the entire world can see them. This tutorial doesn't give any help with making the pages themselves. If you require help creating your page, there is a wealth of information online.
There are many ways to get your HTML, GIF, and JPG files transferred from your computer to ours. This document cannot cover them all. Instead, we'll focus on the most common methods that have emerged. Choosing the best way depends heavily on how you created the page in the first place. There are many programs that not only provide an easy interface to web page creation, but make uploading as easy as a single click. If you use such a program, the best source of information is the program documentation. At the end of this tutorial is some generic information that might be useful in configuring your program.
Some Things to Remember
- After you've uploaded your pages, you can access them by putting http://www.wco.com/~your-login-name/filename.html in your browser.
- If you upload your main page as index.html in your public_html directory, you can access it by using http://www.wco.com/~your-login-name and the index page will automatically load. This will also work for index.html files placed in subdirectories that you create.
- File names are case sensitive. In other words Index.html is not the same as index.html.
